Driving from Hilton Head to Gainesville GA

We will be visiting the area in April %26#39;06 for the first time. Planning to drive from Hilton Head to Gainesville Ga. Map Quest suggests we take interstate travel all the way, toward Atlanta. We%26#39;re wondering about taking an alternate route so not to cheat ourselves of some of the sights. Anyone willing to lend an opinion? Also, ideas for must do stops along the way, including meals? We realize it will be an early start and an entire day of travel. Any advise would be appreciated!

Driving from Hilton Head to Gainesville GA

I checked to see what Interstate Mapquest was advising. I agree. Any other way will just give you small farms, little nothing towns and bad narrow roads. At least on the Interstate, you won%26#39;t have to worry about getting stuck behind a farm tractor on a crooked road. The ';sights'; if any, will be few and far between. It would be a leisurely drive and if you would like that, give it a try. The speed limit in these little towns is usually 25-35 mph and their city limits go waaaaaayyy out, so be care and don%26#39;t speed.

You could go through Athens, the home of the University of Georgia.

MapQuest advises going to Savannah to get on I-16, take time to do either a riding or walking tour around the Historic District. Check out Fort Pulaski. The squares and parks should be beautiful in the first part of April. You really don%26#39;t want to miss it. If you have never been to Savannah, take time to do it. It%26#39;s worth it. Then on I-16 to Macon and Atlanta.
