We are looking to stay on Hilton Head this coming June. Which area should we stay at? They%26#39;re so many. Palmetto Dunes, Forest Beach etc. We want to be able to walk to most places. We would like shopping, Laying on the beach. etc. We are bringing our dog, and would like to be as close to the ocean as possible. Is there an upside or downside to any of these resort communities? Thanks
Where to staywhere to stay is based more on your interests and budget.
If you are beach oriented, Forest Beach, Palmetto Dunes or the South Beach area of Sea Pines is best, though Shipyard has beach access. With the exception of Forest Beach all of these are gated communities.
Tennis players will gravitate to Shipyard for Van Der Meer, though Sea Pines and Palmetto Dunes have excellent playing and teaching facilities.
Both Sea Pines and Palmetto Dunes have several Golf courses in the resort. Shipyard has 3 nine hole courses, which are usually played as 18.
The island is fairly big and shopping is available both on and off the island. The best area for walking to shops and dining is Forest Beach with Coligny Plaza. there you will find 80 shops and restaurants.
Sea Pines and Palmetto Dunes both have internal trolley and Buggie systems, which will take you anywhere in those resorts. Each has shopping areas with the mall being part of the Palmetto Dunes/Shelter Cove complex.
As for your Dog! Most of the condominium complexes have pet prohibitions in their by-laws. Consequently the area rental agents will abide by them. Your best bet is to rent a pet friendly house. You may find a condo owner who will flaunt the restrictions by renting a VRBO. Be aware there are also beach restrictions on dogs, and you could be fined if you violate them
It%26#39;s not that we don%26#39;t like dogs, but here on HHI we have a little pest known as a sand flea. they love dogs more than you or I do. They hitch a ride on your pet, and then jump off into a rug and breed. The result is that renters who come after you get bitten and chewed on for months.
Hope this answers your questions.

Where to stayHHIguy thank you for all of your info. we have narrowed it down to Forest Beach condo or a Palmetto Dunes condo. What do you mean ';flaunt'; pet restrictions? Thank you.
The rules are set by the condo board, but some owners may not follow them, when a weekly rental is involved. Nuff said.
The North Forest Beach area has Coligny Plaza, which is very convenient. It has many shops, restaurants, a movie theater, a grocery store. I could count on one hand the number of times we actually had to get in the car and drive while we were on the island!
Palmetto Dunes visitors have the use of a shuttle which can take you to Shelter Cove with Restaurants and Shops, The Mall, and the Piggly Wiggly Supermarket. You can also walk to Tennis and golf.
Both Forest Beach and PD have their benefits. It%26#39;s a matter of individual preference.
