First time MB visitors

We will be going to Myrtle Beach in April for the first time. Was wondering if there were any tours that we should take of the area or even cruises.

We plan on spending a lot of time at the beach, get in some shopping, and going out to dinner.

Is there anything that is considered a ';must see'; in Myrtle Beach?

Thanks for the info.

First time MB visitors

Just south of MB on HWY 17, is Brookgreen Gardens. It is fantasic and in the spring when the azaleas are blooming, it should not be missed.

First time MB visitors

There is tons to do so you definately will not be bored. Please check out my post ';A locals recommendation for any type of food'; for some great food suggestions. There are casino cruises (Southern Elegance is nice) that runs out of Little River if you are interested in that. The Jungle Princess %26amp; Pirates of Barefoot Landing (800-685-6601)are dancing, dining or sightseeing cruises that go down the Intercoastal Waterway. There is also Carolina Safari Tours (843-497-5330), which may be a good choice being you are a first time visitor. It is a jeep which leads you on an interesting tour around town showing you where a lot of different things are located. For shopping I would strongly recommend the new Coastal Grand Mall, Broadway at the Beach and the Tanger Outlets. There is a lot to do at Broadway at the Beach which is a large shopping %26amp; entertainment complex surrounding a lake. There are tons of restaurants, Ripleys Aquarium (which I also recommend), the IMAX theater, a regular movie theater, a putt putt course and paddleboats. That is also where Hard Rock Cafe, Planet Hollywood and Margaritaville is. There are tons of shows in Myrtle Beach...Dixie Stampede, Medieval Times (which are both show %26amp; dinner), Legends in Concert, Carolina Opry and Alabama Theater. Nascar Speedpark is fun for anyone who likes to ride go-karts. La Belle Amie is a vineyard in North Myrtle Beach that offers tours %26amp; wine tastings. Enjoy your trip and please let me know if I can help with anything else!

Do Not,I repeat DO NOT go on Gator Tours out of Murrells Inlet. Very Boring. If you feel like driving go to Charleston for a carriage ride tour of the historic district.

golf for a couple

We are looking for some hacker freindly golf. We enjoy playing by ourselves any advice?

Your best bet is to go later in the day to a complex with more than 18 holes. Try Myrtlewood,Wild Wing, M.B. National, or Legends.

Any good hotels for students in highschool?

Me and some of my friends (5 total) are gonna go to Myrtle Beach for a Get-away-exams trip for 1 -5 or 6 days. I just really want to know which hotel is good because only one of us went to Myrtle beach but he forgot what the hotel name was.

Any good hotels for students in highschool?

Best of luck. No ';good'; hotel will rent to a group of high school or college kids. Most require you to be over 24 and some accept only families and couples. The places I%26#39;ve seen that accept younger folks are real dumps. Also be aware that if you make a reservation and misrepresent your age to get the reservation you will be turned down at check-in.

Any good hotels for students in highschool?

Coastermeister is right on with everything. You may try Sandcastle South 843-448-4316. They do rent to students but require a refundable deposit for each person. Also, Hampton Inn 48th Ave 843-449-5231 rents to students. Hampton is not oceanfront but they are only 2 blocks from it and breakfast is included. Good luck!

Well thanks alot anyways, we%26#39;re gonna find somebody whos a good friend that is over 24. Hopefully we can still go there and like not get screwed over, and are most hotels like that? having to be 24 or older to check in.

Actually, I believe that most chain hotels now require that you be at least 21 years of age, have a valid credit card, and have some sort of government issued ID (a drivers license is fine) with you at check in. Also, they require that there is at least one person 21 or older in each guest room, so be sure to take that into consideration as well.

Thanks! That%26#39;s the nicest thing that you%26#39;ve ever said about me and I will not have it deleted for once.

ok... thanks for the info...

A couple of years ago I was able to book The Polynesian for my son%26#39;s senior trip in June. They required an extra deposit.

I don%26#39;t know that it was a particularly ';nice'; hotel but it was oceanfront %26amp; in a pretty safe area. They didn%26#39;t try to rip them off because they were ';kids';. I have been warned that some of the dumpier places will try to do that to younger groups.

It%26#39;s difficult to find a place willing to rent to anyone under 25. It%26#39;s too bad for those who really do want to just have fun but younger groups have a reputation for trashing hotels.

Good luck.

Hey! Me and my friend went to Myrtle last year and we had just turned 19 so we had a hard time finding a hotel! We ended up staying at the Quality Inn and Suites... you have to be 18 to stay there. We had to make a 100 dollar safety deposit and they gave it back to us at the end! It is one of the cheapest hotels, it was not trashy (it was average... we had no problems with it at all and we can be very picky) and the location was great! Right across the street from the beach, and about a mile or 2 down the street from the Freaky Tiki (best club at MB)! So I recommend staying there! :)

You probably won%26#39;t be able to get away with just having your 24 year old friend check in. Many hotels require IDs for all guests. I stayed at the Atlantica for my senior trip and it was great! You only have to be 18 and they do require a security deposit(I forget how much) but as long as you don%26#39;t trash the room you get it back. The rooms are like condos with a separate bedroom and livingroom and kitchen area. We didn%26#39;t have any trouble with getting yelled at for being loud or having guests in our room. Basically don%26#39;t be an idiot and you%26#39;ll be fine, you can definitely still have a good time. Two friends of mine stayed at the Poindexter during the same week and it was not nearly as nice of a room. It is the same resort but those rooms are normal hotel rooms and the one I saw was not nice at all. One thing I can advise is ask for a non-smoking room even if you do smoke unless you want a room covered in cigarette burns.

This past summer I stayed at the Sea Park Motel and it was MUCH cheaper and actually wasn%26#39;t bad at all for what we paid for it. I was really nervous but it wasn%26#39;t dirty or anything, the rooms are a bit out dated but we weren%26#39;t looking for anything fancy.

Both the Atlantica and the Sea Park are in the perfect area for walking the ';strip'; and for going out to the clubs. Even if you don%26#39;t stay at one of them definitely look at the addresses and try to stay around there! You%26#39;ll definitely want to be where all the action is!!

Let me know if I can help with anything else!

If you like seafood and local dining, check out The Seacaptains House in Myrtle Beach. Nice place and great food!

Broadway at the Beach always hosts a HUGE New Years party which is always lots of fun!

I was at Broadway at the Beach for the 2004/2005 New Years Eve party. It was a lot of fun, and there were tons of people there! I think they had a fireworks show early in the evening. Depending on the ages of your group I would check out Broadway, it was a great way to ring in the New Year!

    Teen Vacation

We went to Cancun last year with our teens and want to find a similar US experience. They loved the beach and the nightlife (dancing and music). Any suggestions for a US-based summer vacation? We have two families with ages 13, 15, 17, and 19. Thanks!

    Some News of Interest

A couple of items to report --

There is now a new water taxi service that is running between Patriot%26#39;s Point in Mt. Pleasant and The Maritime center on peninsula Charleston. The cost is $5 one way and $8 round trip.

This will make it so much easier for visitors that are staying in Mt. P, Isle of Palms, or Sullivan%26#39;s Island to get downtown for shopping, dinner, etc.

Also, sometime in 2006, there will be a Ruth%26#39;s Chris Steakhouse opening downtown. I%26#39;ve eaten at the RCS in Weehawken, N.J. and the steak was right good. But it was easily the most expensive steak I have ever eaten; this is a very high-end establishment but will add to the intrigue of new steakhouses in Charleston, such as the new Mo Sussman%26#39;s.

    Some News of Interest

    Floski:

Thanks for the info about the water taxi. So you park at Patriot%26#39;s Point and ride? Is there a cost for parking?

Any idea where the Red Roof Inn is in MP? We are staying there for New Years. I am told it is right across the bridge. We have never stayed in MP as we usually stay a few miles south on 17. I am concerned about having to drive that night, and was hoping I could get some input about cost of taxis, other ideas for transportation into the city at night and in the wee morning hours.

    Thanks so much.

    Some News of Interest

Parking at Patriots Point is free of charge.

To get to the Red Roof Inn, once you cross the Cooper River Bridge, stay on 17-North and turn right at the first traffic light (McGrath-Darby Rd.), it%26#39;ll be an almost immediate left onto the frontage road and the RR Inn is on the right.

    Happy New Years!

  • myrtle beach, surfside, garden city

We are a family of 4, 10 year old and 19 year old sons, our first vackay to south carolina, i want to to rent a home on the beach, but what are the thoughts about renting in surfside or garden city and perhaps taking in myrtle beach at night? Any suggestions? Thanks!

    myrtle beach, surfside, garden city

This is not a bad option if you have a car. both places are very nice and close to myrtle beach.

    myrtle beach, surfside, garden city

Both are great places to rent a beach house. There is a pier in both Garden City and Surf Side. The Garden City Pier has an arcade, cafe and bar over the water. So there is lots to do in that area.

kandeorell, that sounds like a great idea. While I have never stayed in Surfside or Garden City, I hear it is great and the beach is not quite as crowded as Myrtle can get. BE SURE to hit Myrtle Beach at night (especially with that 19 yr old.) You must try the Pavillion area. Cheesy, but fun! Also go to Broadway at the Beach and Barefoot Landing. These are shopping/entertainment places with lots of things for adults and kids of all ages to do. And of course you must play mini-golf at one of the hundreds that you will see. Picking just one is tough.

    Have fun!!

You are talking about going in the Spring/Summer aren%26#39;t you? Right now, so many of the ';fun'; places are closed for the season.

We%26#39;ve been going to Garden City for 7 years and it%26#39;s more peaceful, cleaner and closer to Murrells Inlet. You are just a short drive to the hustle and bustle of everything. You would be making a mistake if you go any place else.

Pawley%26#39;s Island (south of Murrell%26#39;s Inlet) also is great for beach lovers but nothing much else to do.

Actually my chooice would be the area of Myrtle Beach between 52nd and 79th north. This is not North Myrtle Beach but the northern part of Myrtle Beach. Some hotels in this area are Forest Dunes,Caravelle,Long Bay and Grande Shores.

This section is referred to as the Golden Mile.It is basically a residential area with hotels mixed in and has much less congestion than the rest of Myrtle Beach.

Broadway at the Beach is about 5 miles south and Barefoot Landing is 7 miles north.

There are numerous summer houses right on the beach many of which rent from 51st heading south for about 10 to 12 blocks.

Forest Dunes has large 1500 square foot condos (three bedroom-two bathroom) with fantastic views that probably rent for much less than a house.

Pine Lakes Golf course is a half mile away and Myrtlewood%26#39;s two courses are 2 1/2 miles away.

TONYMIK, we stayed at Carolina Winds in this section and you are right, it is the best part of MB. A little quieter and much nicer. There are some beautiful homes along this area, but I have no idea how to go about renting these.

Beach Lady3= Chicora Realty seems to be a big player in the area,a phone call to them should bring results. My personal choice would still be a 3 bedroom at Forest dunes. The units have both north and south views and the living rooms have floor to ceiling windows.

    Advice for Senior Citizens

Pardon this long post, we are planning to travel via Amtrak to Charleston and Savannah and have some questions.

    1. Suggestions on where to stay in Historic District for under $200 per night?

    2. What is the weather like the latter part of March? When do the Azaleas bloom?

    3. Is a car rental ncecessary to see the must see attractions and sites in Charleston?

    4. What mode of transportation is available from the Amtrak station to downtown?

    5. Is 5 days to much/too little time to see the sites of Charleston?

    Thanks for your help

    Advice for Senior Citizens

Late March is one of the best times to visit Charleston as the summer heat has not yet arrived! Here%26#39;s some quick answers to your questions...

    1. Suggestions on where to stay in Historic District for under $200 per night?

If you’re looking for hotel chains, The Mills House (www.millshouse.com) is a Holiday Inn property but you’d never know it…the daily fee for parking is $12. The King Charles Inn (www.kingcharlesinn.com) is a Best Western hotel. Both are in the heart of the historic district.

For B%26amp;B’s and Inns, I’d recommend the following:

    Elliott House Inn - www.elliotthouseinn.com

    Andrew Pinckney Inn - www.andrewpinckneyinn.com

    Market Street Inn - www.marketinn.com

    2. What is the weather like the latter part of March? When do the Azaleas bloom?

Typically late March is very nice...mid 60%26#39;s though we could have rain. The azaleas and other flowers should be in bloom by late March.

    3. Is a car rental necessary to see the must see attractions and sites in Charleston?

If you just stay in the historic district, a car is not necessary. However, if you want to go out to the plantations (Magnolia Plantation has the beautiful bridge surrounded by flowers), you will need a car. However, most hotels can arrange for tours via the tour companies to the plantations. I personally would rent a car (if possible) so you can tour the plantations on your own schedule.

    4. What mode of transportation is available from the Amtrak station to downtown?

The Amtrak station is actually in North Charleston so you will need to take a taxi to downtown as I personally do not recommend the city bus service. You could also take a taxi over to the Thrifty car rental on W. Montague Street if you decide to rent a car.

    5. Is 5 days to much/too little time to see the sites of Charleston?

5 days is a good amount of time to get a taste of Charleston…just enough to make you want to come back for more. Here’s the link to my trip report on 5 days in Charleston when some friends visited for the first time: tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g54171-i105-k34364…

    Enjoy your visit!!

    Advice for Senior Citizens

    Excellent advice, TravelGirl, as always.

I%26#39;d like to make one comment. 885, when you arrive at the Amtrak station in North Charleston, please do not be alarmed. It is safe, but not in a good neighborhood. Just get a taxi and head to your hotel, or to the Thrifty place as TG suggested. Overall, Charleston is a safe area so don%26#39;t be worried. Just be smart.

Sorry ,make that 1105 South. Just click on the hotel name that is on the left side of this page and that will take you to a review page. You can click on ';map this hotel'; to see where it is.

Hi I Thought this map was so helpful glad it helped you Im almost positive coral beach is right by sea mist. have a good trip!

Thanks Beachlady3 Now I know exactally where I%26#39;m going to be! This will be my new husbands first time in Myrtle..but I%26#39;ve been many times and actually stayed at the Sea Mist before so I know how far a walk to take him to the Pavillion area for some fun! Can%26#39;t wait to go and show him all around! I hope he%26#39;s up for some walking when I take him to barefoot Landing! lol So thanks again for the info!

Be sure to go to Broadway at the Beach also. This is closer to you anyway. I prefer Broadway rather than Barefoot. Have fun!!

I was thinking of barefoot Landing because as I was checking out places I haven%26#39;t been before I saw something called Ghosts and Legends. Even been there? Aslo a place called Dirty Dans Oyster Bar...it sounded like a fun place.

You mean Dirty Dicks that place is totally wild food is not that good but its quite a fun time. Dixie stampede is more fun than legends.

Thought yall may be mixing a couple names so I wanted to help you out...there is Dirty Don%26#39;s Oyster Bar and then there%26#39;s Dicks Last Resort (which is the CRAZY restaurant at Barefoot)!

    Weather in March

Planning a trip to Myrtle Beach around March 9/06. What is the weather like at that time? Good for swimming at beach or water parks or is it too cold? Also, looking for attractions for kids ages 6, 8, 10.

    Weather in March

I don%26#39;t think the water parks %26amp; other attractions will be open in March, and it may not be quite warm enough yet for ocean swimming (although you may see a few people going in), so do your kids a favor %26amp; stay in a hotel that has an indoor pool complex and/or heated outdoor pool/spa.

    Weather in March

    Hi tpl,

Weather varies a lot in March. Could be 75, could be 55. Myrtle Beach has a typical seasonal schedule. Water parks will not be open. Beach water will be VERY cold. Mini golf areas will be open as all of the shopping areas. lots of theaters, including IMAX will be open. The aquarium is open all year. I agree that if swimming is a top priority with your children then look for a hotel with a nice indoor heated pool. We enjoy MB anytime of year but if you%26#39;re looking for warm weather, for sure, then you may want to go further south.

    Hotel next door to Bummz

I know Camelot by the Sea is on one side...anyone know the one on the other side? The outdoor pool has a pirate ship thing for the kids to climb on I think.

    Hotel next door to Bummz

The Breakers is on the other side of Bummz.

Best Sports Bar in Hilton Head?

Where is the best sports bar in Hilton Head and are there hotels within walking distance?

Best Sports Bar in Hilton Head?

HHI brewery is great and make their own beers it is mid island at Sea pines circle. Between Sea Pines and South beach. It is in an area called the triangle. There is three bars in the plaza. I think they are all sports bars. One is an irish pub Reilleys. Another is a pool billiard.Check it out. Good food and spirits.

Best Sports Bar in Hilton Head?

Callahans and Casey%26#39;s on New Orleans Road are both Sports Bars with a wide selection of games available on Saturday and Sunday.

You might also like Wild Wings which is located on Pope Avenue.

If you are a Chicago or Notre Dame fan then the place to be is Hincheys at Coligney.

Casey%26#39;s is a great bar-lots of TV%26#39;s and good ';bar'; food.

Hilton Head Brewery is fun too, with 3 bars in close proximity (like next door.) One of the bars is called ';The Lodge'; It is cool in the winter time, has a real fireplace and good food.

There is a bar in Harbor Town (Sea Pines) at the very end. I cannot remember the name but look it up. It has a beautiful view of the water.

A nicer bar would be the Boathouse. Good seafood and also had a pretty view. If it%26#39;s warm they have a great outdoor bar on the water.

As far as lunch goes, Hinchey%26#39;s is the BEST. Never been there for dinner, but if it anything like lunch, it will be awesome!!

  • Myrtle Beach Directions

First time driving to Myrtle Beach and could use some help with directions. Leaving from Rome NY. on a Monday, spending one night on the road. Going to South Myrtle Beach. Any suggestions on routes and/or place to stay on the road? Thanks!

    Myrtle Beach Directions

    catalina,

much is dependant on how many hours you will be on the road your first day as where to stay.assuming you will be traveling down I-95, and how much off 95 you are willing to stray ultimately determines recommendations for places to stay...

as for directions...again, assuming you are going for speed over scenary, then stick to 95. after crossing into SC (you can%26#39;t miss it..Pedro from South of the Border will give you plenty of notice), exit at 38E (the exit is 181-B i think). follow to 501 S. to avoid traffic and congestion in Conway, exit onto 22E. follow to Rte 31 S. you will find 22 %26amp; 31 a nice alternative to sticking to 501 into Myrtle Beach. depending on your final destination, you can take 31 all the way to the end and exit on 544 (Georgetown exit) or get off at Rte 501, dropping you into the heart of MB..follow Rte 544 to Rte 17 (approx 4 miles) you will either head south towards Georgetown/Pawleys/Litchfield, or north into the southern part of MB.

hope this helps and makes sense.

My husband and I are looking to get away in mid-late February and are thinking of Hilton Head, South Carolina. We are from NY and are looking for a place a bit warmer. Could anyone offer advice on whether or not Hilton Head is a good choice that time of year, and if so, what do you recommend doing? We will be bring 2 dogs as well, as we think the beaches are open to dogs that time of year.

    Hilton Head in February

Yes the beach is available to dogs in Feburary.

Our average tempurture duing the day is in the sixties in February and 40%26#39;s in the evenings. Not swimming weather, but very playable for golf and tennis. In fact the USTA tennis season is going full bore that month.

In general expect the temparture to be 15 -25 degrees warmer than New York City.

hotel with indoor pools for kids

My husband and I are taking our 3 children (ages 4,6 and 8) to the beach next weekend for the night. We wanted a place with plenty of indoor water activity, but also wanted a nice place. I read that the Landmark had plenty of pools, but was run-down. I also read that the Bay Watch was nice in North Myrtle, but it didn%26#39;t appear to have as much to do. Sea Crest and Monterey Bay Suites also had kid friently looking indoor pool areas. Any advice on which would be better?

hotel with indoor pools for kids

There are so many to choose from.

Yes, the Landmark%26#39;s is the most extensive %26amp; a real bargain, but getting a nice room is hit or miss. You would have to specify you want one of the recently remodeled suites.

Captain%26#39;s Quarters also has a nice indoor complex and is very reasonably priced, but, like the Landmark, is not well reviewed by fussy guests.

I would suggest Long Bay for a nice, reasonably priced place. Your kids would like their kiddy pool with the rain mushrooms %26amp; lazy river. They also have shuffleboard %26amp; ping-pong. And a sauna.

PS: This time of year, you really don%26#39;t need reservations, so if you have ';reservations'; ABOUT a property, go take a look %26amp; then decide. There will be specials up on the marquees that are only available to walk-ins.

hotel with indoor pools for kids

    forgot to add:

Monterey Bay is very nice, you would especially like the rooms, but their indoor pool area, while very well maintained, is not nearly as large as the others mentioned. Parking can be a bummer if you have a large vehicle, but the free breakfast is a nice bonus.

All places get bad reviews here. Don%26#39;t write any of them off just because someone you don%26#39;t know was not pleased.

We just got back yesterday from a stay at the Coral Beach Resort. It has 10 pools. (4 indoor) One large indoor pool, 2 inside jacuzzi pools and a roman spa! It also has an 8 lane bowling alley! Bowling was only $2 per person before 6pm and free shoe rental. I think it%26#39;s only a $1 more plus shoe rental after 6. My 7 year old had a blast! We stayed in 606 (ocean front) it had 2 dbl beds a galley kitchen and a living area with a Murphy Bed! My son thought that was the coolest thing. It looks recently updated. New carpet and paint. We only ate breakfast once there. It was a pretty good buffet and reasonbly priced. We were there for 4 nights over New Years weekend. The staff was great. They even suggested that the Ripley%26#39;s Aquarium had a New Years Eve sleepover with the sharks for kids only 6-12 years old. I was apprehensive at first but gave in and my son said it was too cool to sleep in the shark tunnel! I highly recommend this resort. Only 10 minutes to Boardwalk at the Beach.

charleston v.s. barrier islands for vacation

Last year we went to Savannah and stayed on Tybee Island in an oceanfront condo because we like the beach with the beautiful historic city to roam in. I hear Charleston is just as beautiful (if not more) but was thinking of staying on Sullivan%26#39;s or IOP to have beach access but drive into the city. Are the islands very expensive for condo rentals? We like to be able to rent several with several families. We are thinking about coming the week before Easter this year. Is there one island over the others that%26#39;s more convenient for driving into town? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

charleston v.s. barrier islands for vacation

I think that for the most convenience, Sullivan%26#39;s is the best; it is a very easy drive through Mt. Pleasant and then you get on the breathtaking new Ravenel Bridge, witch will drop you right into town. As far as cost is concerned, Folly Beach is probably way cheaper to rent and it%26#39;s not too far away (a very easy drive into town). IoP is more than likely going to be the most expensive and is on the other side of Sullivans Island from Charleston.

Now I%26#39;m just speaking in generalizations and you could probably find places that are not too expensive on any of the islands. If you are renting with other families, it shouldn%26#39;t be that bad regardless of where you stay.

charleston v.s. barrier islands for vacation

We just returned from the Isle of Palms ( Wild Dunes). It was just marvelous. We like Folly as well, but IOP is so much nicer. It%26#39;s our pick over Myrtle, Folly, Tybee...and we%26#39;ve been to them all. Best wishes.

Thanks for the suggestions. IOP sounds wonderful, especially when looking at some of the oceanfront homes that accomodate large groups. We will be coming in April, the week before Easter. Is the weather nice then or still a bit chilly? I think the tour of homes will be going on then. Is it worth the $45 dollar ticket or should we stick with the plantation tours?

IOP is amazing. You will find it to be richer and more manicured than Folly. Folly has a young, hippy-vibe, so I guess it%26#39;s all in what you are looking for. Folly is closer to downtown, but IOP is only approx 10 miles from downtown, and has a lot to offer in the way of shopping and dining.

My husband and I stayed in Seabrook Island, which is the southern tip of Kiawah. It is the longest drive, at about 20 minutes, but worth it for a completely different atmosphere. The entire island is private, uncrowded, clean, perfect for r %26amp; r. The vegitation/environment is like day %26amp; night as compared to IOP/Sullivan%26#39;s/Folly. There are tons of trees, deer, animals, but you are right on the beach - a wild experience.

Your best bet is vrbo.com. You can see pictures of all the houses/condos, price shop, etc. There is a string of oceanfront condos at Seabrook, many of which are rented through vrbo.com. We had a great experience using it, and will do so when we visit again.

  • You should know: Taxicab

To all visitors, please allow in your plans, 15 minutes to get a cab. On a busy morning checking out of your hotel it will usually take 5 to 15 minutes, so plan on it. Better yet get the front desk or concierge to set this up ahead of time with Maxwell or Black cab. I know someone who missed a flight because they tried to get a cab 46 minutes before her plan was to take off. This is enough time to get to the airport and check-in usually, but when you have to wait for a cab it is not. Remember it is not Chicago or New York.

    You should know: Taxicab

I seldom have good experiences with cabs in Charleston. Back in February (mind you - not high season by any means), it took 45 minutes for a cab to pick me up at south King Street. For New Year%26#39;s Eve, I made reservations with a cab company 12 hours ahead of time. They even pushed the time back a bit, but I was willing to accomodate them, seeing as it WAS New Year%26#39;s Eve. But they never showed. I ended up driving into the city from Mt. Pleasant. It wasn%26#39;t as bad as I thought it would be. On my first loop, I was able to find a free parking space right on Calhoun.

Was anyone else in the city for New Year%26#39;s? What were your experiences? It wasn%26#39;t as crowded as I had expected, which was a pleasant surprise. We started out on King Street and headed for the Market area around 11pm or so. Stayed there til 2.

I am considering attending the wine tasting this coming Saturday at the festival. I have never been to this festival nor stayed in Pawleys Island area. So any input would be greatly appreciated. I will be in Columbia prior to that on business and saw the festival online.

    Hampton Inn - Pawleys

Ripraft . . . does your suggestion that i check out pawleys plantation mean that the Hampton Inn is a bad place to stay?

I was asking about the Hampton Inn because I have booked it for one night. Of course, I can cancel if find out that it%26#39;s unclean or dreadful in any other way. I don%26#39;t really need (or want) a full condo (which is, I believe, what Pawleys Plantation offers. Just need a comfortable, safe, and clean room for the night. Thanks

Hampton Inn in Litchfield/Pawleys Island is very nice. You should find accommodations to be very clean as the hotel is fairly new.

    Ripraft-

Thinking of coming to Pawleys Island in October for 2 nights, have a friend in Rock Hill that I am visiting and we wanted to go to a nice beach for a couple of nights- have not been to area (we do Isle of Palms in summer)..what do you suggest for lodging? How is Seaside Inn? Any help is greatly appreciated- Lisa in Iowa

Check the Seaside Inn comments in the Forum above on this site as well as the Fodor%26#39;s writeup, also on this site. Seaside is fun and relaxing, the food is outstanding (the main meal is at lunch), and the seaside porch and the rocking chairs can hardly be matched. It%26#39;s not the Holiday Inn or other chain -- it%26#39;s kind of a trip back to a slower paced lifestyle, with the exception of a very few rooms it isn%26#39;t air condtioned but the sea breeze at nite thru the screened windows in one of the main reasons we return there.

Did you end up staying there?

How was it? How was the ';hot'; breakfast.. ;)

    Transportation Around Myrtle Beach

We are planning a first time trip to MB in June. I realize this question depends on where the hotel is and what you want to do, but, in general, is a car a necessity to get around or do most of the attractions and restaurants have shuttles, etc, to them or are they within walking distance? Thanks for any thoughts or opinions.

    Transportation Around Myrtle Beach

You really do need a car to get to resturants, Broadway at the Beach, Barefoot Landing (both are nice entertainment/shopping areas) malls,

theatre, etc. There ARE shuttles I do believe, however, I would not rely on them to take me where I want to go. And walking to most of these is not something you would want to do. Too much traffic and busy 4 lane roads to cross. Take your car or rent one, you won%26#39;t be sorry.

nice hotel for kids with activites

Iwant to take the kids to a different beach we stay down buy the shore in ocean city and would like to take the kids for a couple days to someplace that is fun for kids with activites to do to keep them busy

  • Monterey Suites?? Advice Please

Considering booking for a week August stay. Any opinions, have 4 children under 18. Thanks

    Monterey Suites?? Advice Please

Did you read the reviews? The suites are very nice %26amp; quite a bargain with the free breakfast. They have a pool that is half indoor half outdoor (kids love that).

If you have a large vehicle, parking can be a challenge but overall, a good choice.

    Monterey Suites?? Advice Please

Yes, I read the reviews. alttle nervous when I heard about ';bus'; in the suites. I am not too concerned with parking and/ or slow elevators, but insects and nasty smells worry me. Are there any stores, restuarants, miniature golf, ice cream... etc within walking distance? Thanks

a bus in the room? gee, I wonder how they got it in there? (LOL)

All I can say is we have stayed in over a dozen different places in MB %26amp; my wife liked our suite at Monterey Bay the best of any. We had no housekeeping issues, in fact, everything was above par throughout the place.

I laugh when I read people complaining about the breakfast...what the heck do you want for no extra charge when the room price is already very reasonable...black tie waiters asking how you want your Eggs Benedict? Five star it ain%26#39;t, but believe me, with 4 kids, this alone will save you a bundle.

The property is in the north end of MB (but not NMB) so you will not be in the heart of the commercial area. There are stores %26amp; food within walking distance but not much for the kids without getting in the car (or you could use the complimentary bus in your room).

  • -6 and counting!

This time next week I will be in Charleston!!!! Hope the ice did not do damage to you---it looked bad further north on the TV!

I want to go to the big festival of lights celebration at James County Park. It sounds just delightful and I am a kid atheart, so my second night I will head there. Is there transportation from Charleston like a bus/charter from the city center---you know for us tourist types :-)? Or will I need to drive (I have no problem with driving, but just wondered). What is the best way to go there, I will be staying in Mt. Pleasant but probably leaving from the city center.

Get out the shrimp and grits, I am bringing my appetite! See you soon!!!

    -6 and counting!

Hey Kittygal: prior to our move to SC...Southern CA was our home. We now live just south of Charlotte, NC and apx. 3 hours from Charleston. We were in Charleston the middle of September for the first time and I can%26#39;t wait to go back. You are going to love it! Have fun!

    -6 and counting!

Kittygal: No ice here!! The news really overexaggerates things (big shocker I know).

I don%26#39;t know of any tourists charters to the Festival of Lights. I personally think it%26#39;s best to just drive out there on your own so you can go at your own pace...there%26#39;s lots of activities going on at the ';center'; when you get to the FOL. It is really popular especially on the weekends so if you can go on a weeknight, I think it is more enjoyable.

To get there from Mt. P. or downtown is very simple...just take 17 South over the Bridge by the Round Holiday Inn (everybody knows it by that name). When you get over the bridge, follow the signs to Folly Beach and then when you cross over the draw bridge, you%26#39;ll start seeing signs to either the Festival of Lights or James Island Park.

    Enjoy your visit!!

Great, thanks for all the advice. The FoL sounds great---I love that kind of stuff.

Was wondering about some of the plantations near the area, like Boone and Magnolia, and some near Beaufort. I have seen Louisiana and Georgia homes and would love to see the SC versions as I am sure the architecture is a little different (which fascinates me). I may have a few hours to do that on the 24th, even if only from the outside (as I know most places close early that day). Any suggestions?

Thanks as ever! I am packing today---looks like it will be cool and maybe rain at some point, with St. Augustine being the warmest area I%26#39;ll visit. So am packing a wide range of layers!

Kittygal: I posted a trip report about a week%26#39;s worth of touring I did when some friends came to visit Charleston for the first time and it%26#39;s posted at:

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g54171-i105-k34364…

We hit 2 of my favorite plantations (Boone Hall and Drayton Hall) as well as my favorite historic house downtown (Edmonston-Alston House on East Battery). If you only have time to visit one plantation, I highly recommend Boone Hall as it is the oldest working plantation in America. There is a lot of fascinating history about the place as well as so much to see and do out there. Take the $5 tram ride around the outer plantation and definitely eat at Serena%26#39;s (the plantation restaurant...only open for lunch)...some of the best fried green tomatoes I%26#39;ve ever had!!

Let me know if you have any other questions. Happy travels!

Thanks for the auggestions---I read your report, very thorough!. I think I will definitely do the Boone plantation.

I started packing last night...and then unpacking...and packing again! So excited...only hope the weather in DFW is good as I am flying through there and have been stuck in hellacious storms before at that airport. Fingers crossed!

    Free parking with hotel stay!

    Hello,

I will be taking my family on a cruise in February and will be driving to the Port of Charleston. We intend to arrive a day or two early to tour the city. Are there reasonably priced hotels that offer free parking for the length of the cruise (7) days?

    Thanks,

    Threebish

    Free parking with hotel stay!

Most of the downtown Charleston hotels do not offer free parking due to the limit space downtown. The only hotels that come to mind that MAY offer free parking are the Courtyard by Marriott Downtown Riverview (843-722-7229), Residence Inn by Marriott Charleston Riverview (843-571-7979), Springhill Suites by Marriott (843-571-1711), and Comfort Inn Riverview (843-577-2224). While all these hotels are in the downtown area, they are not within walking distance of the historic part of town but are about a 5-10 drive away. IF they offer free parking, I%26#39;m sure a taxi ride to the port would be very reasonable.

The alternative would be to check out the hotels near the airport as there is ample parking at those hotels and they MAY offer free parking for your situation. Again, a taxi ride to the port should be pretty reasonable from the airport area.

Something to keep in mind, if you are planning to be in Charleston around Feb 17-19, hotel prices will be at a premium as there is a big city-wide event taking place (Southeastern Wildlife Expo).

Enjoy your visit and safe travels!

    Good hotels near the Pavillion

I%26#39;m looking for a good, clean hotel located within walking distance of the Pavillion. Is myrtlewood villas within walking distance of this location or at least to the beach?

    Good hotels near the Pavillion

shdavis, to the left of this screen, if you scroll down, you will find Myrtlewood Villas listed. Click on this and it will tell you more about it. Looks like it might be a little hike to the beach and an even longer one to the Pavillion area. Other than that, it DOES look like a very nice, clean place to stay if you don%26#39;t mind being away from the beach. Personally, if I%26#39;m going to the beach for vacation, I want to stay ocean front.

    Good hotels near the Pavillion

Myrtlewood is definitely not within walking distance!! It%26#39;s a very nice development; the condos are clean and spacious. I%26#39;ve stayed there once on a golf package and was very pleased.....but you%26#39;ll have to drive to the beach or the Pavillion. I just booked an ocenfront room for a few days later in January at the Ocean Plaza, which is not too far from the Pavillion and right on the beach. It was only $30 a night for an oceanfront efficiency and most of the reviews I%26#39;ve read were ok....nothing glowing...but ok. I chose it mainly for price since I%26#39;ll just be golfing with my son anyway! Oddly enough, we own a condo in Myrtle but I%26#39;ve got it rented all winter so I have to resort to renting a motel!!! Talk about justice.... :o)

Check the listings and reviews here on Trip Advisor...it%26#39;s a great place to start! When you think you have the best rate....don%26#39;t forget to check with the hotel/motel directly....you may very well get an even better rate. (I did!)

    Good luck!

    Gerry

Personally I would not recommend staying near the Pavillion Area.There%26#39;s a great area between 52nd and 79th in the northern part of M.B. Much less congested and has shuttle service to the Pav. Area from a few of the hotels. Some of the hotels are Forest Dunes,Ocoen Forest,Caravelle and Long Bay.

We would like to visit either Hilton Head or Myrtle Beach in mid April. What is the weather usually like during this time? Is it warm enough to go to the beach, etc. Thank you in advance for any responses.

Weather in Hilton Head/ Myrtle Beach mid April

It should be warm enough to enjoy the beach unless we have some unusual weather. HH will most likely be a little warmer than MB.

Whether or not the water will be warm enough for swimming depends on what you like. A lot of people think it%26#39;s just fine, but I would shiver!!

    Charleston report

I am writing this from the Fernandina Beach, FL, library---have not been near a computer since I arrived in Charleston Dec. 22. Bliss..

The drive into Charleston via 17 was in the dark, but the stars were just spectacular. And the very first bridge I crossed brought the scent of pluff mud and brine into the car---just like I%26#39;d read in all the Anne Rivers Siddon books. Got to Mt. Pleasant safely and settled in at the Old Village Post House. Had dinner there in the tavern bar---excellent she crab soup and some ';southern hummus'; dip made with black eyed peas and grits---delish. The next day I went to Boone PLantation and enjoyed the tour. Then raided the Publix for things you can%26#39;t really find in California ($5 local stoneground grits---I MUST be nuts, but I love grits). Had lunch at Red%26#39;s Ice House and then went into Charleston and walked all over. It was very cool that day---below freezing both nights---but I liked the change in weather. Then headed over to the festival of lights---wonderful fun. Had dinner at Bessinger%26#39;s buffet (the sauce! yum, yum!). The next day went into Savannah via Beaufort (just beautiful) and the back roads. The scenery is so unlike anything I have ever seen (except for the area around Tybee, 5 years ago). Not nearly enough time---I will be back, that%26#39;s for sure! I will write individual reviews of eveyrwhere I stayed/ate once I get home.

    Charleston report

Sounds like you had a wonderful time~ Thank you for coming to visit Charleston and hope you do return again!

    Charleston report

Kittygal, glad to hear you enjoyed your visit to Charleston...definitely stay longer next visit!

The southern hummus sounds divine. I am always on the look-out for some good, meat-free options. My hubbie and I are coming to the area (for the 4th time this year) this weekend. Any suggestions on places to eat with veggie options? Where is the Old Village Post House? We are staying in Mt. Pleasant. Thanks!

The OVPH is in the old village just near Shem Creek. They have beautiful rooms available. (I will be writing a review as soon as I getover my jet lag). The restaurant has two dining rooms or you can eat in the tavern, where I did. The grits (I had a side) were good too. I did see some vegetarian options on the menu, which has daily specials too.

Thanks. We will definitely visit the next time we vacation in Charleston. Unfortunately, I didn%26#39;t get the post in time. We ended up having an awesome time. We ate at Bocci%26#39;s on Sunday night, and the food was amazing. We will definitely return to Bocci%26#39;s on our next trip. All in all, we had a great time... just wish it was longer!

I posted all my reviews: the OVPH Inn, Bessinger%26#39;s, Red%26#39;s Ice House---so others can enjoy the wonderful hospitality I experienced! I know I will definitely be back someday, but till then I have plenty of Carolina style bbq sauce (three different brands!) and some stone ground local grits (the kind that take a half hour to cook) to remind me of my travels.

No, there is not your traditional Boardwalk. The Beach front motels/hotels are right on the beach and extend all the way back from the beach to the street. There%26#39;s nothing between them and the ocean. Most of them have pools of various sizes for both children and adults.

Hi! The Boardwalk Beachfront Hotel and The Caribbean Resort are both oceanfront, have multiple water activities for the kids (lazy river, indoor pool etc.) as well as multiple outdoor pools. They both also offer eficiencies with kitchens and separate sitting areas. Neither one are 4 star, but I have stayed at both and found them to be clean and decent and we had a great time at both. In March, there will not be any fresh local shrimp since the shrimping season will be closed and will not open until May or June. East Coast Seafood in Rockville on Wadmalaw Island will have frozen shrimp that were caught at the end of the season and frozen for off season sale. Just give them a call at the above mentioned number.

Zero tolerance laws are based on a simple concept: since it is illegal for persons under 21 to drink alcohol, it should also be illegal for them to drive with any alcohol in their system.';

    Sorry!

    legal drinking age

SC is especially tough on drinking and driving!

In our state, if you are stopped and there is an open container containing alcohol, that is prima facie proof of DUI, not only for the driver but all passengers in the vehicle.

    This includes beer and wine.

Interesting note. SC was the last state to have mini bottles served in public restaurants. On Jan 1 2006, they allowed restaurants to pour from larger bottles.

    Beach Fleas

How bad are the beach fleas in HH that I have read in a few postings? I am traveling with my dogs in February. They wear Frontline. Should I be concerned?

    Beach Fleas

The sand Fleas are not as prevelant here in Feb, as it is cooler.

If the pet is medicated at least two weeks before your visit you should not have any trouble.

  • Quality Ocean Front hotel with a bar/restaurant

My husband and I love the beach and decided to head to Myrtle Beach this year due to the somewhat close driving distance. We usually fly to Daytona (so you see we don%26#39;t have too high of beach standards!) but we do want a clean, ocean front hotel with some ammenities. Maybe a restaurant and bar. (poolside bars are always nice!) We are also looking for a place that is in the heart of the action since we are still fairly young and won%26#39;t have children traveling with us! Thanks for any advice! We are excited about trying out a new beach this year!

Quality Ocean Front hotel with a bar/restaurant

We have stayed at Ocean Forest Plaza and Carolina Winds. Great hotels. Marriott Grande Dunes is great, so is Grand Shores. I suggest you stay to the north end of Myrtle beach. Much nicer area, not as crowded.

As far as pool-side bar, if the hotel doesn%26#39;t have one, just BYOB. Much cheaper and easier. No glass though and remember to be discreet.

Bring a little cooler with your beverage of choice.

shelter cove and fishing. where to stay?

was looking at your site and found the map most helpful. My husband and i coming for the first time and the map helped me get a better picture of the island. However i need some advice. We are coming down on a time share tour of the new surfwatch by mariott and will be arriving june 30th and leaving june 3 however we want to go charter fishing for two days prior. We want to stay in ocean front and someone mentioned shelter cove would be the closet marina. I want a suggestion on where to stay so we can simply walk to the marina and get our charter boat. I think we are looking at captian Hooks charter. I am wanting something close to surfwatch so i was looking at the mariotte golf resort for two days before we go to the surfwatch resort. However that doesnt seem walking distance. Any suggestions, anyone?

    thanks

shelter cove and fishing. where to stay?

shelter Cove and the marina are on the Broad Creek side of the island. Across the main Road Route 278 is Palmetto Dunes, which is an ocean front resort. the Ocean is about three miles from Shelter Cove.

As I mentioned in a previous post there are two ocean front hotels in the resort. The Marriott and the Hilton.

I believe the Hilton would be better for you, because of the following. Palmetto Dunes runs a shuttle service to Shelter Cove. If you are staying at the Marriott, you cannot take the shuttle!!!

The reason is that the Marriott corporation has not paid their share of the shuttle costs for the past two years. therefore the shuttle will not serve any Marriott guest. Since you stated you don%26#39;t want to rent a vehicle, you will need transportation.

The Hilton is preferable because it is a suite hotel. I think it has a better restaurant than the Marriott. It is behind the gate, while the Marriott is not. Take a look at some of the reviews of both venues on this website, and you will see that most people have had a better experience at the Hilton Resort.

  • Where to stay?

Hi, we are from Tennessee and will be first time travelers to Myrtle Beach the week of July 4th. I would like suggestions of places to stay that are on the beach, close to Broadway at the Beach, yet still not so close that the traffic is terrible. This may not be possible, but I%26#39;m hoping someone will have suggestions. We don%26#39;t want to stay in a dump, but we can%26#39;t afford %26#39;high class%26#39; either. Thanks from TN.

    Where to stay?

    hey TNgirl,

first of all, check out all these other posts for some great info that will help you out. Just read thru them.

I suggest you stay anywhere from 55Ave. and up in Myrtle Beach. NOT close to the Pavillion area. Forest Dunes is nice, so is Ocean Forest Plaza and Carolina Winds (which is at the very north part of Myrtle Beach. Nice area! Everything is close by in these areas.

A word of warning: The July 4th Week is ALWAYS CROWDED and expensive!! If you can go the week before or after it really makes a difference.

    Where to stay?

The Ocean Forest ,Forest Dunes area is real nice as mentioned. As mentioned its the most crowded time of the year but if you have children theres numerous fireworks displays to be seen during this time frame. The traffic in this section on rte 17 really thins out as compared with anywhere near the Pavillion area and North Myrtle Beach.Learn how to use roads such as Grissom Parkway and RTE 31 to help you get places quicker.

We always stay at Forest Dunes when we go to Myrtle Beach, and we haven%26#39;t been burned yet. It is removed enough from the S. Ocean Blvd. section to be relaxing, yet you can still get to all of the major attractions in just a few minutes. It has never been overcrowded when we were there either, just full enough to be enjoyable. However, we have never gone around the 4th of July. You should probably get your reservation taken care of now, because I imagine that things fill up pretty early for that week!

A word of wisdom: If you do choose Forest Dunes and you go for the ocean-view room vs. the ocean-front to save money, request something near the front of the building. The ocean-view rooms near the back don%26#39;t have the greatest view. Better yet, for the minor difference in price, just go for the ocean-front. We did last time and we were really glad that we did!

    Weather in late March

My husband and I will be visting HHI during the last week in March. What is the weather usually like then? Are the jellyfish really as bad as people have said? Thanks.

    Weather in late March

Usually it should be pretty nice. The water may be a little chilly for swimming. That will depend on what you like. Jelly fish usually don%26#39;t show up until the water gets warm. I wouldn%26#39;t worry about them.

    Weather in late March

As a resident, I can assure you that it can be nice, or it can be chilly. It%26#39;s a little early for going into the ocean, but many of the condo%26#39;s do have heated pools.

In any case you can play tennis, or golf just about any day it dosn%26#39;t rain.

    hhiguy

We visited HHI in late March three years ago. The weather varied from warm and sunny during the afternoon (low 70%26#39;s most days) to chilly in the evening and early morning. The beach was very nice, and our kids could go in wading, but we did not swim. We used the indoor pool at our hotel, as it was a bit too cool to use the outdoor one. We had a ball renting bikes and riding all over Shipyard Plantation and the weather was perfect for that. There were virtually no crowds anywhere we went. I think that most of the tourists don%26#39;t come that early. Also, we did not see one jellyfish. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the great information. I am a teacher and this is our spring break time. Hopefully it will be nice. We are looking forward to visiting.

    Garden City Beach Myrtle

Has anyone stayed at condos at Garden City Beach - south of Myrtle? Looking for a condo that is clean, quiet, and well kept. Do not need luxury accommodations, but want to make sure we don%26#39;t end up with a dump either! Comments would be appreciated.

    Garden City Beach Myrtle

Very nice area. Try Dunes or Garden City Realty. Lots of selections/pictures on their web sites. Well managed. North Myrtle is also nice, and we use Elliot Realty to find accomodations up there.

    Garden City Beach Myrtle

As someone mentioned North Myrtle Beach is nice ,the problem you can have there is when you get out to 17 which can be a traffic nightmare during the 5 or 6 weeks of summer. The area of Myrtle between 55th and 79th is IMO a better choice.Great central location and easy to reach Grissom Parkway and 17 Bypass.Hotels with good reputations in that section are Long Bay, Grande Shores, and Forest Dunes.

surfsiderealty.com also has lots of condo%26#39;s in Garden City. We love Garden City and Surfside!

We stayed in a condo complex called Water%26#39;s Edge in Garden City. They have a really nice sundeck, and indoor and outdoor pool, an outdoor jacuzzi, an outdoor tiki bar, a hotdog/hamburger joint, and an another indoor dressier bar on the ground floor. Lots of families and couples stay there. Unit 304 was really pretty (new furnishings, clean, etc). We rented from Dunes Realty (dunes.com), had a great experience, and would definitely return when we visit Garden City again.

    Kingston Plantation/ Townhouse or Villa

Anyone familiar with these accomodations? Both are said to be about a 5 min. walk to beach. Both are 2 bedrooms/2 bath. Would like some input on which is nicer for family of 4.

    Thanks!!

    Kingston Plantation/ Townhouse or Villa

Hi. Unfortunately, I cannot comment on the villas, however, I%26#39;ve stayed in the condos at Kingston Plantation twice. During my first visit, I stayed in a spacious 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom condo. This condo looked like a newer model and was immaculate. It was in the West Hyde Park section of the Plantation. The only downside was this unit was a little further from the beach than many of the other units. (Keep in mind that some of the units overlook the beach). In November 2005, I stayed in a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom unit in the Richmond Park section. This unit did not appear as ';new'; as the one from my previous stay, but it was still very nice and comfortable. The one major plus to this unit was that it is located only a hop-skip-and-jump away from the beach. Both units in which I stayed were on the 2nd floor, but since this one was so close to the beach, I could stand on the balcony and see the ocean. Also, all of the units have a full kitchen/dining room and washer/dryer, which I found to be very convenient.

Hope this helps. Have a great trip!

New timer ---- what to do?

I will be in MB at the end of February, and hail form upper new york. I have no idea what to expect, or what to do down there. I will be going for a workshop, and was womdering what to do in the afternoon/evenings for fun. Am not a rich girl, but not totally frugal either. any suggestions? will be around the breakers area

New timer ---- what to do?

Tbere%26#39;s more to do than you will have time for. Your hotel will have stacks of visitor%26#39;s guides with info on attractions, restaurants, shopping, shows, etc... It%26#39;s fun to go down to the Pavillion and the funky shops along Ocean Dr. There are shows to see, a Ripley%26#39;s Aquarium, shopping....go to Broadway at the Beach. And, just enjoy the beach. There%26#39;s a fine spa at Marriott Grande Dunes....Brookgreen Gardens south of Myrtle. You%26#39;ll have plenty to do and a great time. Best wishes.

New timer ---- what to do?

Broadway at the Beach is a must. You can check out their website: www.broadwayatthebeach.com

Barefoot Landing is the same type place, but ';Broadway'; is nicer.

February may be a little chilly for a lot of beach time, but a stoll on the beach and along a pier is also a must. There are some very nice outlet stores and a couple of malls if that is your thing. And yes, check in your hotel lobby for lots of brochures of places and things to do (they have coupons too.

I enjoyed shopping along Broadway at the Beach- there are various shopping centers and North Myrtle beach has a few good shopping spots as well. If you are looking for a place to stay I would recommend Myrtlewood Villas. Whatever you do avoid Microtel Inns and Suites - the staff there is deplorable.

I visited in March of 2004, and the Pavilion and most of the stores around the %26#39;strip%26#39; area were still closed for the season. Everything was still open at Broadway at the Beach and Barefoot Landing (though Barefoot was DEAD). The nice thing is that you don%26#39;t have to wait in line to eat! If you have a car, travel south to Murrell%26#39;s Inlet one night for dinner. And take a tour at Huntington Beach State Park. Enjoy!

Someone suggested Myrtlewood Villa%26#39;s,and although they are quite nice Im nnot sure if they have any indoor pool areas. They are a big favorite of golfers. But with prices being low at the time of year that your going you can get some great ocean front condo%26#39;s. Why take the ';Beach'; out of Myrtle Beach?

One of the best night time activities was seeing legends in concert show. This show is about impersonators. The impersonators I saw were elvis, madonna, garth brooks, rod stewart, sting, and the blues brothers. Great show for 29 dollars. Book online in advance and get front row. Small venue with about 500 seats. Its a must see that you wont regret.

Hi...where is the Legends in concert show? You mentioned getting tickets online. Is there a website? thanks..

Sea Loft Complex in Hilton Head, SC

I recently booked a week at a Sea Loft residence for a week in February. The residence looks a bit odd from the outside (like a space ship), but it is well decorated inside. Anyone ever stay in Sea Loft? I am a bit confused about the location, but someone told be it is the best side of te island. Is this true? Any advice would be appreciated.

Sea Loft Complex in Hilton Head, SC

The Sealofts are an older complex in Sea Pines. They are located on Deer Island which is just a short walk from Harbortown. The area is quite wooded and the SeaLofts are Tree Houses. They are circular in nature and yes they do look odd.

Since these are all individually owned, some are better than others. The biggest problem you might encounter is mold contanimation. You should have no trouble if the owner takes proper care of the property.

As to location, you are close to shops and restaurants in harbortown. You can also walk to tennis at the Sea Pines Racquet club, and golf at Harbortown ( if you can afford the $250 + green fee). You will probably have to drive to the beach, and the other Sea Pines golf facilities.

    Villa Advice

Planning to go in April with wife and two boys 15 and 13. Would like to be walking distance to Van Der Meer Tennis Center, on the beach, walking distance to shops or restaurants. It seems that Grande Ocean Club and Sea Crest are my best choices. Which is nicer /closer? Are there other suggestions?

    Thanks...

    Villa Advice

Looks like you are interested in Forest Beach area.

Grande Ocean is a Timeshare which is run by Marriott. If you are a timeshare owner and are looking at Grande Ocean vs. Seacrest, Take Grand Ocean.

If however you are not a timeshare owner, there is the SeaCrest resort, which is not the same as the SeaCrest Tennis and Beach Club (The Timeshare). SeaCrest Resort was built in 1999 and has 122 units ranging from 1 - 3 bedrooms. The are lots of amenities like a fitness center, outdoor Jacuzzi, two pools and a Tiki Bar. In April the ';Captains Table'; restaurant should have reopened under new management.

Other choices in the Forest Beach Area which are first class would be Shorewood, and Ocean One.

Lower down on the scale are the Breakers, Seascape villas.

    Villa Advice

Having stayed at the Seacrest Villas the last 3 years, I highly recommend it. It is oceanfront, has 2 pools, a large jacuzzi, fitness center (so-so), across the street from Coligny Plaze, which has lots of shops, restaurants, a movie theater, and a Piggly Wiggly. It was where we stayed our first time (took a leap of faith...didn%26#39;t know anything about it or the area), and I wouldn%26#39;t stay anywhere else!

    Hilton Head vs. Myrtle Beach

We are trying to decide whether to stay on Hilton Head or Myrtle Beach. We are going next August, from California, and have never been to either area. How are they different? Which is the prettiest? Which is the quietest?

    Thanks!

    Hilton Head vs. Myrtle Beach

Mytle Beach is a typical beach resort with a boardwalk and much of the trappings such as miniature golf and some rides available. The area has many golf courses, though none are of championship caliber.

The area also sometimes is called ';East Branson'; since it features theatres with shows that run several times a day. It is about 2 hours from Charleston SC, via Route 17 which is a great day trip.

Hilton Head is much quieter. The island is famed for its devotion to maintaining as much of the natural state as possible. The island is divided into a number of communities commonly called plantations. Beach oriented vacationers would want to stay at Palmetto Dunes, Sea pines, or Forest Beach. All these have hotels or condos available for rent which are right on the ocean. Each plantation has it%26#39;s own set of golf courses with the world famous Harbourtown course located in Sea Pines. The choice of day trips is more varied since Beaufort, Charleston, and Savannah are only a short drive away. Hilton Head is also a top rated tennis resort with three of the top fifty tennis facilities located there. There are over 200 restaurants in the area ranging from Family style to haute cuisine.

    hope this helps.

    Hilton Head vs. Myrtle Beach

I agree with the previous review. Form a slightly different perspective, Myrtle beach is geared towards singles, groups of guys that want to play golf and younger couples that want to stay up late. hilton head is more geared towards families. Hope that helps also

Please read the replys to ';pitt';s posting of the same question under the Myrtle Beach forum

I disagree with the previous postings.Myrtle Beach is part of the Grand Strand. This area covers North Myrtle south to Georgetown.Yes, Myrtle Beach does have many family attractions, including great shows of many types.

If you stay south of Myrtle-

    Pawleys Island is a very quiet, lay-back area.Extremely family orientated.No hustle-bustle there!

Georgetown is also a great place to visit.It%26#39;s the 3rd oldest city in SC(1st Charleston,2nd Beaufort).

Great restaurants, fun things to do--that%26#39;s the Grand Strand. Included you can find great shows, an awesome aquarium, many miniature golf sites, great shopping, etc....

As to golf courses. I totally disagree with the comment that the Grand Strand doesn%26#39;t have high calibur golf courses.I can tell he hasn%26#39;t played golf at True Blue or Caledonia just to name two. There are too many to talk about. You can contact the Horry County or Georgetown County Cahmber of Commerce for all information to help your decision.

I forgot to mention one very important factor-COST!Hilton Head is very expensive to visit %26amp; stay. This deals with every aspect of a vacation!!

I am a native Oregonian, now living in Guam. My daughter lives in NC, so we often go to the beach in that area in the summertime. Myrtle Beach is, in my opinion, kind of ugly and crowded, with kind of a ';girls gone wild'; ambience. Hilton Head is more picturesque and ';family-oriented.'; I like it a lot better. Hilton Head is also quieter, I would say--but both have quite a bit of traffic. I like the Forest Beach area (of Hilton Head), myself, which is less plastic than much of Hilton Head. There are lots of bike rentals, with nice paths and you can also ride on the beach, itself (the sand is firmer than in California).

I agree with most of the previous postings. I have spent time in both, and I lived in Charleston for 4 years. In short, Hilton Head is a much more upscale place than Myrtle Beach. It doesn%26#39;t have the %26#39;in your face%26#39; commercialism that you would find in places like Daytona and Cocoa Beach.

Both have their pros and cons. If you have teenagers, they will enjoy Myrtle Beach more. If you have younger children (under age 8 to 10) they will probably enjoy Hilton Head more. If you have no children, you will probably enjoy Hilton Head more.

As a resident of Hilton Head, I am definitely biased. HH is prettier. HH is quieter. HH is close to Beaufort and Savannah for site-seeing opportunities. But some find HH too quiet. Come after mid-August. It gets dramatically quieter after our kids go back to school.

Obviously, hhiguy from Hilton Head Island is having some difficulty giving on unbiased opinion. However, there is some truth to what he said. The heart of Myrtle Beach is very touristy and features, amusements, putt-putt golf, and is extremely loud and crowded, especially during June and July. However, North Myrtle and Garden City (south of Myrtle) are quite different. Limited high-rises, less touristy, more family oriented. Great condo%26#39;s and resorts on or very near the beach. It%26#39;s all a matter of taste. If you truly want a beach vacation North Myrtle is great. Beaches are fantastic. Good restaurants nearby and good (some great)golf courses everywhere.

Hilton Head is nice, but talk about crowds and traffic!!

If one of your major requirements is which place is the prettiest, than Hilton Head wins hands down!! The locals on the island do a fantastic job of keeping the island VERY well maintained and gorgeous.

A few examples are: No building is allowed to be higher than the tallest tree, other than the lighthouse, and there are no neon signs allowed. Hope this helps!!

    PS Hilton Head is GORGEOUS!!!

    Steve in Ohio

I have never been to Myrtle, only based on what I have heard from people who like the same things I do and did not have a good experience there. However, last May at HHI, there seemed to be a lot more of the younger crowd (college age) there, with a lot of late-night noise (fireworks at 3am???). We are going back this year, but I hope this isn%26#39;t a trend. And as far as MB being ';more affordable'; than HHI, keep in mind you get what you pay for!

Myrtle Beach vs. Virginia Beach - Opinions??

My family and I drive to Myrtle Beach from NY. I wonder if I%26#39;m driving too far. Does Virginia Beach offer all that Myrtle does or is it worth the extra drive to South Carolina?

Please, those among you who%26#39;ve been to both, what%26#39;s your opinion?

Myrtle Beach vs. Virginia Beach - Opinions??

Hello Chubby.. We are from PA and I have been to VB, but awhile go.. MB has alot to offer...and it is a beautiful place to visit..You could order the Stay And Play., it is a magazine..with the hotels/condo%26#39;s and things to do.

We vacation in August and our 3 bed/3 bath condo is about 925.00 for the week..

Myrtle Beach vs. Virginia Beach - Opinions??

We live in Michigan and have been to both too, although we didn%26#39;t stay right on VB but at a place in Norfolk on the beach. My observations are that MB is much cheaper and that, while it can be crowded, it does not have nearly the year round population and therefore is much more relaxing. When we were at VB we couldn%26#39;t believe how congested the whole Hampton Roads area is. Good luck getting through that two-lane tunnel between Hampton and Norfolk during rush hour, and as far as I know that is the main access to VB too. We drove around VB a lot, and it seemed a little older, dirtier, less safe than MB.

There are wonderful things to do in VB, but you may want to stay somewhere that isn%26#39;t right on the main boardwalk if you have kids. It is pretty crazy. Of course, the South Ocean Blvd. area of MB is crazy during the main tourist season too. We have had good luck staying on North Ocean Blvd. It is much more family-oriented and quiet than the main strip further south.

We stay in North Myrtle Beach.. very quiet..

resort..Ocean Creek, we book privately thru

owners.. it is right across the street from the shopping/entertainment complex Barefoot Landing..There are lots of places to stay, Kingston Plantation comes to mind..we children in ages ranging from 16 to 4..and always have a great time..

having grown up in Va Bch, and now living in the MB area, the very obvious question is what is the make-up of your family..your interests..how far you are driving, and how long you are planning to stay.MB offers more ';family activities'; and is geographically larger than VB (from a resort standpoint). if you want beach, uncrowded and very nice, go w/ VB north end (from about 59th St north) or south of MB in Litchfield; Huntington Beach State Park. from a cultural, non beach standpoint, VB has the edge over MB with more museums in the area (Nauticus, Chrysler Museum both in Norfolk). MB has more in the way of putt-putt golf, Medieval Times, Legends, Dolly Parton%26#39;s Dixie Stampede etc.i think there are more interesting restaurants (non chain) in the VB area, but again, w/o knowing the family dynamic, sometimes chains work best for families w/ kids...

also, when are you planning this trip, the 6 hr drive difference also can translate into a difference in temps too.

so, throw out some more detail about what you are looking for and when, and for how long..and we%26#39;ll go from there.

Why do you drive that far now? Have you ruled out all the beach resorts in NY, NJ, DE %26amp; MD?

(Then there%26#39;s also the Outer Banks).

If you%26#39;ve never been to VB, why not stop for a night or two %26amp; check it out (or any of the other beach resorts you drive by). With the price of gas, I%26#39;d be looking to shorten my trip.

I have lived in VB for 12 years. We love it lots of new things to do in the area. We have gone to Myrtle beach to get away from our beach before. If you golf MB is the place to go , if you want shows like Legends again MB is the place. Both have different things to offer, always nice to try something new.

I have stayed on both VB and MB. I always stay on beach front resorts/hotels. They are both very nice and have a lot to offer. I personally think the VB has the better beaches by far. I was not impressed at all with the beaches on MB. MB definitely has much more to offer for golfing and for young children to young teenagers. Waterparks, amusement rides, arcades,etc..

  • Where to stay

We are looking to stay on Hilton Head this coming June. Which area should we stay at? They%26#39;re so many. Palmetto Dunes, Forest Beach etc. We want to be able to walk to most places. We would like shopping, Laying on the beach. etc. We are bringing our dog, and would like to be as close to the ocean as possible. Is there an upside or downside to any of these resort communities? Thanks

    Where to stay

where to stay is based more on your interests and budget.

If you are beach oriented, Forest Beach, Palmetto Dunes or the South Beach area of Sea Pines is best, though Shipyard has beach access. With the exception of Forest Beach all of these are gated communities.

Tennis players will gravitate to Shipyard for Van Der Meer, though Sea Pines and Palmetto Dunes have excellent playing and teaching facilities.

Both Sea Pines and Palmetto Dunes have several Golf courses in the resort. Shipyard has 3 nine hole courses, which are usually played as 18.

The island is fairly big and shopping is available both on and off the island. The best area for walking to shops and dining is Forest Beach with Coligny Plaza. there you will find 80 shops and restaurants.

Sea Pines and Palmetto Dunes both have internal trolley and Buggie systems, which will take you anywhere in those resorts. Each has shopping areas with the mall being part of the Palmetto Dunes/Shelter Cove complex.

As for your Dog! Most of the condominium complexes have pet prohibitions in their by-laws. Consequently the area rental agents will abide by them. Your best bet is to rent a pet friendly house. You may find a condo owner who will flaunt the restrictions by renting a VRBO. Be aware there are also beach restrictions on dogs, and you could be fined if you violate them

It%26#39;s not that we don%26#39;t like dogs, but here on HHI we have a little pest known as a sand flea. they love dogs more than you or I do. They hitch a ride on your pet, and then jump off into a rug and breed. The result is that renters who come after you get bitten and chewed on for months.

    Hope this answers your questions.

    Stan (hhiguy)

    Where to stay

HHIguy thank you for all of your info. we have narrowed it down to Forest Beach condo or a Palmetto Dunes condo. What do you mean ';flaunt'; pet restrictions? Thank you.

The rules are set by the condo board, but some owners may not follow them, when a weekly rental is involved. Nuff said.

The North Forest Beach area has Coligny Plaza, which is very convenient. It has many shops, restaurants, a movie theater, a grocery store. I could count on one hand the number of times we actually had to get in the car and drive while we were on the island!

Palmetto Dunes visitors have the use of a shuttle which can take you to Shelter Cove with Restaurants and Shops, The Mall, and the Piggly Wiggly Supermarket. You can also walk to Tennis and golf.

Both Forest Beach and PD have their benefits. It%26#39;s a matter of individual preference.

If you have enough time take a day trip over to Savannah. I agree with all the previous post on entertainment and food. Also for food Boathouse II, great outdoor dining with a wonderful sunset view, Oyster Factory for all different types of oysters also amazing views of the marsh and water.

I agree... hit savannah. River Street is great.

Hilton Head is beautiful but not lots of activities or shows like you would find at Myrtle Beach. They have some very nice restaurants and shopping there.

CRAZYXX - So, did you end of staying at Coral Reef? What did you think?

Guy%26#39;s you forgot the free family shows available.

Greg Russell at the Liberty Oak in Hsarbortown evenings at 9:00

Shannon Tanner at Shelter Cove also at 9:00

For more grwon up entertainment, The Jazz Corner, and Monkey Business.

With over 200 restaurants there are many good one%26#39;s. Not mentioned yet, Santa Fe, Truffles, Oliver%26#39;s, Juleps, and very many others.

The Crazy Crab is excellent...two locations, Harbor Town and Jarvis Creek. Also the Salty Dog in Harbor Town, Big Bamboo at Coligny Plaza. Wild Wing Cafe also has entertainment, although we haven%26#39;t eaten there yet in the three years we%26#39;ve been to HHI.

I previously replied to this thread, but forgot to mention our newest attraction for children ';The Sandbox';. This is a childrens museaum which opened in November. It is near Coligny.
