I%26#39;m looking to come to South Carolina during our March Break, Mid March (I%26#39;m a teacher). Visited the area this summer and loved it -- again!! So, asked about weather in March regarding Myrtle Beach and got pretty negative response, now I see gardeners visiting Charleston are told its a great time -- which is it? Are blooms out? Should we be thinking to go farther south than Myrtle? We are two adults and only want to escape the cold, enjoy some colour and souther hospitality -- help me decide, please.
March in South Carolina?
Weather in March is pretty variable. Some years it is fairly warm (upper 60%26#39;s, low 70%26#39;s) by mid to late March. However, some years March is quite rainy and cold. I can think of half a dozen times that we have had ice or snow in March. So it is difficult to predict. Most flowers are not yet blooming, April is usually the best month for that. Depending on exactly where you are from - cold by our standards may be warm by yours. Many people from Canada come to the beach in March and actually swim. They think it is great, we think they%26#39;re crazy.
Check weather.com They have lots of info on average temps for various months, etc.
Hope you enjoy!
March in South Carolina?
Hello,
I%26#39;ve ';known'; the Charleston,SC area since 1981.
March can be fantastic. It can also be cool and windy. It%26#39;s the ';luck of the draw';.
Don%26#39;t despair. In mid-March, the Azaleas begin to bloom and all the gardens are about to burst into bloom.
You can go out to Magnolia Gardens on Highway 61, or Middleton place, or just stroll pretty much South of Broad....walk around and look at private gardens, and pretend you live there. If you love History....beSURE to see and tour the Aiken-Rhett House. And Drayton Hall. I%26#39;ve been to all....and can only recommend these two as the best.
Beach will be great if you are staying on any of the islands....usually a light sweatshirt/sweater and shorts is the uniform for beach exploring. Yes....you can ';pick-up'; some color where you are not covered.
The Home and Garden Tours and their various activities which surround them begin Mid-March also.
Charleston is wonderful always...though it is much changed from what it was when ';we'; first met. Newer architecture not always congruous with what the city really is.
Just go. You%26#39;ll want to get to know it in every season.

I live in Michigan and my family and I visited Myrtle Beach in mid-March back in 2001. Being from the North, we figured that it would be reasonably warm and that even the 60%26#39;s would feel good to us. Well, it was very cold! One day we woke up and turned on the Weather Channel to find out the temp and it was 39 degrees! It was actually warmer back home that day. We drove down to Charleston and did the buggy ride on the Battery which was lovely, but the driver had a big stack of wool blankets for all of us to wrap up in, that%26#39;s how cold it was. We couldn%26#39;t wear shorts at all that week, and we had our jackets on most of the time. All of that said, would I do it again? Yes! It was fun and nothing was crowded. We had lunch at the All-Star Cafe at Broadway at the Beach one day and we were the ONLY customers, so we got GREAT service, LOL. There was also a rather intense storm while we were there due to the extreme change in weather patterns and we found the most amazing things washed up on the beach afterwards: live sea urchins, starfish, etc. which you never find when the weather is warm and calm. I guess you have to decide what kind of experienc that you want and be ready for anything!
Your guess would be as good as anyones as to how the weather would be. It could be miserable or wonderful. If you do go, and the weather is good, check out the Brookgreen Gardens just south of MB on Hwy 17. It is an outstanding place to visit.
You might think about going as far South as Savannah. BUT, the week of March 17th is the big St Patricks day party/parade and unless you already have your reservations in, you wouldn%26#39;t be able to get a room.
The neat thing about the South, South Carolina in particular, is that even when it is chilly, it still looks pretty and green. When we were in MB in March, although it was cold outside a lot of the time, the live oaks, palmettos and most of the grass was still a vivid green, in stark contrast to our northern climates where we are at least a few weeks into April before we see even a hint of green. If you were to visit a public garden up here in March, even if it happened to be unseasonably warm, the trees would still be bare (except for the evergreens, of course) and the grass would be brown.
Thanks to all of you for the great input! It has really helped me make up my mind. Now I need to book the condo! I have been to Charleston several times and love it -- MB was going to be our destination, so Savannah was not in the picture (been there, done that). Obviously weather can be erratic, but not having snow, freezing rain and winter white will be wonderful. Anything beyond that is a bonus. Thanks so much for taking the time to share!
enjoy the charm of the city life in charleston but for a more relaxed low country adventure try the laziness of bluffton on the banks of the may river south of charleston but convienent to savannah. bluffton is a state of mind!
Yes....Bluffton should be enjoyed while it still exists as it currently does.
In my last post, I mentioned how much my beloved Charleston has changed since ';we'; met 24 years ago.
I always tell people that Beaufort is the Charleston of those years long past.
Development of the beautiful Lowcountry seems relentless.
It%26#39;s always ';follow the money';.
So, anyone who would like to experience the Lowcountry as it should be.....go to Bluffton and Beaufort. Oh....children and teens will complain of ';nothing to do';.....but that%26#39;s too bad.

Gundi, 2 years ago we stay at James Island County Park for 10 days in March. We were camping but I know there are condos to rent and lots of hotels. We had a wonderful time. Some days were absolutely beautiful and some were cold. UI just remember loving the sun!! Andlike everyone says, it%26#39;s better than up north!
As a teacher you should love all the history associated with Charleston...Patriot%26#39;s Point, the plantations.
We also visited the Outer Banks in February and loved it there too, but would like to go back when it was warmer. There were definitely no azalea%26#39;s then!! Hope this helps some.
fripp island is nice that time of year and the two barrier islands leading out are nice too especially the lighthouse on hunting island. beaufort is a lovely town too and is on the main land near by.
