Last year we went to Savannah and stayed on Tybee Island in an oceanfront condo because we like the beach with the beautiful historic city to roam in. I hear Charleston is just as beautiful (if not more) but was thinking of staying on Sullivan%26#39;s or IOP to have beach access but drive into the city. Are the islands very expensive for condo rentals? We like to be able to rent several with several families. We are thinking about coming the week before Easter this year. Is there one island over the others that%26#39;s more convenient for driving into town? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.
charleston v.s. barrier islands for vacation
I think that for the most convenience, Sullivan%26#39;s is the best; it is a very easy drive through Mt. Pleasant and then you get on the breathtaking new Ravenel Bridge, witch will drop you right into town. As far as cost is concerned, Folly Beach is probably way cheaper to rent and it%26#39;s not too far away (a very easy drive into town). IoP is more than likely going to be the most expensive and is on the other side of Sullivans Island from Charleston.
Now I%26#39;m just speaking in generalizations and you could probably find places that are not too expensive on any of the islands. If you are renting with other families, it shouldn%26#39;t be that bad regardless of where you stay.
charleston v.s. barrier islands for vacationWe just returned from the Isle of Palms ( Wild Dunes). It was just marvelous. We like Folly as well, but IOP is so much nicer. It%26#39;s our pick over Myrtle, Folly, Tybee...and we%26#39;ve been to them all. Best wishes.
Thanks for the suggestions. IOP sounds wonderful, especially when looking at some of the oceanfront homes that accomodate large groups. We will be coming in April, the week before Easter. Is the weather nice then or still a bit chilly? I think the tour of homes will be going on then. Is it worth the $45 dollar ticket or should we stick with the plantation tours?
IOP is amazing. You will find it to be richer and more manicured than Folly. Folly has a young, hippy-vibe, so I guess it%26#39;s all in what you are looking for. Folly is closer to downtown, but IOP is only approx 10 miles from downtown, and has a lot to offer in the way of shopping and dining.
My husband and I stayed in Seabrook Island, which is the southern tip of Kiawah. It is the longest drive, at about 20 minutes, but worth it for a completely different atmosphere. The entire island is private, uncrowded, clean, perfect for r %26amp; r. The vegitation/environment is like day %26amp; night as compared to IOP/Sullivan%26#39;s/Folly. There are tons of trees, deer, animals, but you are right on the beach - a wild experience.
Your best bet is vrbo.com. You can see pictures of all the houses/condos, price shop, etc. There is a string of oceanfront condos at Seabrook, many of which are rented through vrbo.com. We had a great experience using it, and will do so when we visit again.
