I am writing this from the Fernandina Beach, FL, library---have not been near a computer since I arrived in Charleston Dec. 22. Bliss..
The drive into Charleston via 17 was in the dark, but the stars were just spectacular. And the very first bridge I crossed brought the scent of pluff mud and brine into the car---just like I%26#39;d read in all the Anne Rivers Siddon books. Got to Mt. Pleasant safely and settled in at the Old Village Post House. Had dinner there in the tavern bar---excellent she crab soup and some ';southern hummus'; dip made with black eyed peas and grits---delish. The next day I went to Boone PLantation and enjoyed the tour. Then raided the Publix for things you can%26#39;t really find in California ($5 local stoneground grits---I MUST be nuts, but I love grits). Had lunch at Red%26#39;s Ice House and then went into Charleston and walked all over. It was very cool that day---below freezing both nights---but I liked the change in weather. Then headed over to the festival of lights---wonderful fun. Had dinner at Bessinger%26#39;s buffet (the sauce! yum, yum!). The next day went into Savannah via Beaufort (just beautiful) and the back roads. The scenery is so unlike anything I have ever seen (except for the area around Tybee, 5 years ago). Not nearly enough time---I will be back, that%26#39;s for sure! I will write individual reviews of eveyrwhere I stayed/ate once I get home.

Charleston report
Kittygal, glad to hear you enjoyed your visit to Charleston...definitely stay longer next visit!
The southern hummus sounds divine. I am always on the look-out for some good, meat-free options. My hubbie and I are coming to the area (for the 4th time this year) this weekend. Any suggestions on places to eat with veggie options? Where is the Old Village Post House? We are staying in Mt. Pleasant. Thanks!
The OVPH is in the old village just near Shem Creek. They have beautiful rooms available. (I will be writing a review as soon as I getover my jet lag). The restaurant has two dining rooms or you can eat in the tavern, where I did. The grits (I had a side) were good too. I did see some vegetarian options on the menu, which has daily specials too.
Thanks. We will definitely visit the next time we vacation in Charleston. Unfortunately, I didn%26#39;t get the post in time. We ended up having an awesome time. We ate at Bocci%26#39;s on Sunday night, and the food was amazing. We will definitely return to Bocci%26#39;s on our next trip. All in all, we had a great time... just wish it was longer!
I posted all my reviews: the OVPH Inn, Bessinger%26#39;s, Red%26#39;s Ice House---so others can enjoy the wonderful hospitality I experienced! I know I will definitely be back someday, but till then I have plenty of Carolina style bbq sauce (three different brands!) and some stone ground local grits (the kind that take a half hour to cook) to remind me of my travels.
