First time MB visitors

We will be going to Myrtle Beach in April for the first time. Was wondering if there were any tours that we should take of the area or even cruises.

We plan on spending a lot of time at the beach, get in some shopping, and going out to dinner.

Is there anything that is considered a ';must see'; in Myrtle Beach?

Thanks for the info.

Just south of MB on HWY 17, is Brookgreen Gardens. It is fantasic and in the spring when the azaleas are blooming, it should not be missed.

There is tons to do so you definately will not be bored. Please check out my post ';A locals recommendation for any type of food'; for some great food suggestions. There are casino cruises (Southern Elegance is nice) that runs out of Little River if you are interested in that. The Jungle Princess %26amp; Pirates of Barefoot Landing (800-685-6601)are dancing, dining or sightseeing cruises that go down the Intercoastal Waterway. There is also Carolina Safari Tours (843-497-5330), which may be a good choice being you are a first time visitor. It is a jeep which leads you on an interesting tour around town showing you where a lot of different things are located. For shopping I would strongly recommend the new Coastal Grand Mall, Broadway at the Beach and the Tanger Outlets. There is a lot to do at Broadway at the Beach which is a large shopping %26amp; entertainment complex surrounding a lake. There are tons of restaurants, Ripleys Aquarium (which I also recommend), the IMAX theater, a regular movie theater, a putt putt course and paddleboats. That is also where Hard Rock Cafe, Planet Hollywood and Margaritaville is. There are tons of shows in Myrtle Beach...Dixie Stampede, Medieval Times (which are both show %26amp; dinner), Legends in Concert, Carolina Opry and Alabama Theater. Nascar Speedpark is fun for anyone who likes to ride go-karts. La Belle Amie is a vineyard in North Myrtle Beach that offers tours %26amp; wine tastings. Enjoy your trip and please let me know if I can help with anything else!

Do Not,I repeat DO NOT go on Gator Tours out of Murrells Inlet. Very Boring. If you feel like driving go to Charleston for a carriage ride tour of the historic district.

golf for a couple

We are looking for some hacker freindly golf. We enjoy playing by ourselves any advice?

Your best bet is to go later in the day to a complex with more than 18 holes. Try Myrtlewood,Wild Wing, M.B. National, or Legends.

Any good hotels for students in highschool?

Me and some of my friends (5 total) are gonna go to Myrtle Beach for a Get-away-exams trip for 1 -5 or 6 days. I just really want to know which hotel is good because only one of us went to Myrtle beach but he forgot what the hotel name was.

Any good hotels for students in highschool?

Best of luck. No ';good'; hotel will rent to a group of high school or college kids. Most require you to be over 24 and some accept only families and couples. The places I%26#39;ve seen that accept younger folks are real dumps. Also be aware that if you make a reservation and misrepresent your age to get the reservation you will be turned down at check-in.

Any good hotels for students in highschool?

Coastermeister is right on with everything. You may try Sandcastle South 843-448-4316. They do rent to students but require a refundable deposit for each person. Also, Hampton Inn 48th Ave 843-449-5231 rents to students. Hampton is not oceanfront but they are only 2 blocks from it and breakfast is included. Good luck!

Well thanks alot anyways, we%26#39;re gonna find somebody whos a good friend that is over 24. Hopefully we can still go there and like not get screwed over, and are most hotels like that? having to be 24 or older to check in.

Actually, I believe that most chain hotels now require that you be at least 21 years of age, have a valid credit card, and have some sort of government issued ID (a drivers license is fine) with you at check in. Also, they require that there is at least one person 21 or older in each guest room, so be sure to take that into consideration as well.

Thanks! That%26#39;s the nicest thing that you%26#39;ve ever said about me and I will not have it deleted for once.

ok... thanks for the info...

A couple of years ago I was able to book The Polynesian for my son%26#39;s senior trip in June. They required an extra deposit.

I don%26#39;t know that it was a particularly ';nice'; hotel but it was oceanfront %26amp; in a pretty safe area. They didn%26#39;t try to rip them off because they were ';kids';. I have been warned that some of the dumpier places will try to do that to younger groups.

It%26#39;s difficult to find a place willing to rent to anyone under 25. It%26#39;s too bad for those who really do want to just have fun but younger groups have a reputation for trashing hotels.

Good luck.

Hey! Me and my friend went to Myrtle last year and we had just turned 19 so we had a hard time finding a hotel! We ended up staying at the Quality Inn and Suites... you have to be 18 to stay there. We had to make a 100 dollar safety deposit and they gave it back to us at the end! It is one of the cheapest hotels, it was not trashy (it was average... we had no problems with it at all and we can be very picky) and the location was great! Right across the street from the beach, and about a mile or 2 down the street from the Freaky Tiki (best club at MB)! So I recommend staying there! :)

You probably won%26#39;t be able to get away with just having your 24 year old friend check in. Many hotels require IDs for all guests. I stayed at the Atlantica for my senior trip and it was great! You only have to be 18 and they do require a security deposit(I forget how much) but as long as you don%26#39;t trash the room you get it back. The rooms are like condos with a separate bedroom and livingroom and kitchen area. We didn%26#39;t have any trouble with getting yelled at for being loud or having guests in our room. Basically don%26#39;t be an idiot and you%26#39;ll be fine, you can definitely still have a good time. Two friends of mine stayed at the Poindexter during the same week and it was not nearly as nice of a room. It is the same resort but those rooms are normal hotel rooms and the one I saw was not nice at all. One thing I can advise is ask for a non-smoking room even if you do smoke unless you want a room covered in cigarette burns.

This past summer I stayed at the Sea Park Motel and it was MUCH cheaper and actually wasn%26#39;t bad at all for what we paid for it. I was really nervous but it wasn%26#39;t dirty or anything, the rooms are a bit out dated but we weren%26#39;t looking for anything fancy.

Both the Atlantica and the Sea Park are in the perfect area for walking the ';strip'; and for going out to the clubs. Even if you don%26#39;t stay at one of them definitely look at the addresses and try to stay around there! You%26#39;ll definitely want to be where all the action is!!

Let me know if I can help with anything else!

    new years

If you like seafood and local dining, check out The Seacaptains House in Myrtle Beach. Nice place and great food!

    new years

Broadway at the Beach always hosts a HUGE New Years party which is always lots of fun!

I was at Broadway at the Beach for the 2004/2005 New Years Eve party. It was a lot of fun, and there were tons of people there! I think they had a fireworks show early in the evening. Depending on the ages of your group I would check out Broadway, it was a great way to ring in the New Year!

    Teen Vacation

We went to Cancun last year with our teens and want to find a similar US experience. They loved the beach and the nightlife (dancing and music). Any suggestions for a US-based summer vacation? We have two families with ages 13, 15, 17, and 19. Thanks!

    Some News of Interest

A couple of items to report --

There is now a new water taxi service that is running between Patriot%26#39;s Point in Mt. Pleasant and The Maritime center on peninsula Charleston. The cost is $5 one way and $8 round trip.

This will make it so much easier for visitors that are staying in Mt. P, Isle of Palms, or Sullivan%26#39;s Island to get downtown for shopping, dinner, etc.

Also, sometime in 2006, there will be a Ruth%26#39;s Chris Steakhouse opening downtown. I%26#39;ve eaten at the RCS in Weehawken, N.J. and the steak was right good. But it was easily the most expensive steak I have ever eaten; this is a very high-end establishment but will add to the intrigue of new steakhouses in Charleston, such as the new Mo Sussman%26#39;s.

    Floski:

Thanks for the info about the water taxi. So you park at Patriot%26#39;s Point and ride? Is there a cost for parking?

Any idea where the Red Roof Inn is in MP? We are staying there for New Years. I am told it is right across the bridge. We have never stayed in MP as we usually stay a few miles south on 17. I am concerned about having to drive that night, and was hoping I could get some input about cost of taxis, other ideas for transportation into the city at night and in the wee morning hours.

    Thanks so much.

    Some News of Interest

Parking at Patriots Point is free of charge.

To get to the Red Roof Inn, once you cross the Cooper River Bridge, stay on 17-North and turn right at the first traffic light (McGrath-Darby Rd.), it%26#39;ll be an almost immediate left onto the frontage road and the RR Inn is on the right.

    Happy New Years!

  • myrtle beach, surfside, garden city

We are a family of 4, 10 year old and 19 year old sons, our first vackay to south carolina, i want to to rent a home on the beach, but what are the thoughts about renting in surfside or garden city and perhaps taking in myrtle beach at night? Any suggestions? Thanks!

    myrtle beach, surfside, garden city

This is not a bad option if you have a car. both places are very nice and close to myrtle beach.

    myrtle beach, surfside, garden city

Both are great places to rent a beach house. There is a pier in both Garden City and Surf Side. The Garden City Pier has an arcade, cafe and bar over the water. So there is lots to do in that area.

kandeorell, that sounds like a great idea. While I have never stayed in Surfside or Garden City, I hear it is great and the beach is not quite as crowded as Myrtle can get. BE SURE to hit Myrtle Beach at night (especially with that 19 yr old.) You must try the Pavillion area. Cheesy, but fun! Also go to Broadway at the Beach and Barefoot Landing. These are shopping/entertainment places with lots of things for adults and kids of all ages to do. And of course you must play mini-golf at one of the hundreds that you will see. Picking just one is tough.

    Have fun!!

You are talking about going in the Spring/Summer aren%26#39;t you? Right now, so many of the ';fun'; places are closed for the season.

We%26#39;ve been going to Garden City for 7 years and it%26#39;s more peaceful, cleaner and closer to Murrells Inlet. You are just a short drive to the hustle and bustle of everything. You would be making a mistake if you go any place else.

Pawley%26#39;s Island (south of Murrell%26#39;s Inlet) also is great for beach lovers but nothing much else to do.

Actually my chooice would be the area of Myrtle Beach between 52nd and 79th north. This is not North Myrtle Beach but the northern part of Myrtle Beach. Some hotels in this area are Forest Dunes,Caravelle,Long Bay and Grande Shores.

This section is referred to as the Golden Mile.It is basically a residential area with hotels mixed in and has much less congestion than the rest of Myrtle Beach.

Broadway at the Beach is about 5 miles south and Barefoot Landing is 7 miles north.

There are numerous summer houses right on the beach many of which rent from 51st heading south for about 10 to 12 blocks.

Forest Dunes has large 1500 square foot condos (three bedroom-two bathroom) with fantastic views that probably rent for much less than a house.

Pine Lakes Golf course is a half mile away and Myrtlewood%26#39;s two courses are 2 1/2 miles away.

TONYMIK, we stayed at Carolina Winds in this section and you are right, it is the best part of MB. A little quieter and much nicer. There are some beautiful homes along this area, but I have no idea how to go about renting these.

Beach Lady3= Chicora Realty seems to be a big player in the area,a phone call to them should bring results. My personal choice would still be a 3 bedroom at Forest dunes. The units have both north and south views and the living rooms have floor to ceiling windows.
