restuarants in Charleston

I am traveling to Charleston in late April with my husband to celebrate our 10th Anniversary. Would appreciate recommendations on restuarants in the downtown area. Also any suggestions for tours would be great. We have planned a view Plantation tours. But I am also looking for some walking tours.

I really like Charleston Walks ';The Original Charleston Walk'; tour (www.charlestonwalks.com). Check out their site as they have a discount coupon for tours.

As far as restaurants...Charleston is a food lover%26#39;s town. A few of my favorites are Hank%26#39;s Seafood (only open for dinner) on Hayne Street for upscale but not pretentious seafood, AW Shuck%26#39;s on State Street for casual seafood, 82 Queen on Queen Street for upscale dinner (but you can get a moderate price lunch here), Poogan%26#39;s Porch on Queen Street for moderate lunch and dinner and a pretty tasty brunch. For some real upscale dining, Peninsula Grill on N. Market Street and Carolina%26#39;s on Exchange Street. Grill 225 on corner of East Bay Street and South Market Street is a great place for steak and the roof top bar is fabulous in the Spring.

A couple great places for drinks are Tristan%26#39;s on Church Street (yummy martinis), Club Habana on Meeting Street (martini and cigar bar), and the Pavillion Rooftop Bar (rooftop of Grill 225).

Enjoy your visit!

For very reasonable seafood try Hyman%26#39;s. You will also enjoy reading of all the celebs who have dined there.

Hyman%26#39;s.....can you say TOURIST TRAP???

Hey captruss, have you not realized that nearly every store or restaurant in Charleston is a tourist trap of some kind?

If not for tourists, nee guests, Charleston would still be a rinky dink little town.

What makes Hyman%26#39;s a tourist trap, anyway? Because they advertise? A lot!? I have no problem with what they do to garner business; in a city with the best restaurants east of the Mississippi, you have to do what you can to get customers. I%26#39;ve lived here since 1971, and have been to Hyman%26#39;s once (last month). It is a fine eatery and they should have no concerns with being labled a tourist trap.

Actually, Hymans is considered a ';tourist trap'; because 90% of everyone who goes there is a tourist and the food is at best mediorce for the masses.

OTOH, a place like The Wreck, the Boulevard Diner, or the Alair Bistro in Mt Pleasant cater to the local set and expect RETURN visitors which makes all the difference!
