My husband and I will be in Charleston in a week. I am wondering about the Battery Carriage House. Has anyone stayed there? Would you recommend it? Thanks for your help?
Battery Carriage House B%26amp;B
We stayed there and enjoyed it very much. We loved Charleston. There%26#39;s just something in the air there. We walked many places, took tours, drove to tea at a hotel, enjoyed the waterfront location, the waterfront park not far away.
You%26#39;ve probably seen their site:
batterycarriagehouse.com
I notice nowadays they are stressing that one does not stay in the mansion itself but in the extensive carriage house accommodations. It seems people had been surprised in the past that they were not staying in the mansion itself. I do think they might have some photos of the actual place where one stays...that would seem reasonable...but I%26#39;ve only seen photos of the mansion. But, don%26#39;t worry, the carriage house is very nice.
This b%26amp;b has been around a while...before there were so many, if I remember correctly, when people were putting up guests in guest cottages and carriage houses on their properties.
We checked in walking down the %26#39;driveway%26#39; or more properly the carriage way in what one might call today the terrace level of the mansion....the servants%26#39; quarters of old. Then we walked further back to the long carriage house. I believe the idea is the ground level is where carriages and horses were accommodated and the second floor is where the carriage drivers and maybe guests%26#39; servants were accommodated years ago. But it%26#39;s very nice now.
NOTE: The funny thing is when we checked in the hostess asked us how tall we were. It%26#39;s the first time we were asked that checking in. %26#39;How many nights%26#39; maybe or %26#39;Will you be needing anything else%26#39; etc. but never ';How tall are you.'; It turned out the first level of rooms has very low ceilings. I%26#39;m thinking maybe 6%26#39;. So check on that when booking. The second floor was higher.
We enjoyed going out in the morning to the garden courtyard. We could tell them when we wanted breakfast and right at that time a gigantic tray was delivered to our door. After a long while there was a knock at the door and the woman would call out ';Tray retrieval'; and we%26#39;d hand the tray back to her. The breakfast was not small or second thought just because it was delivered. It was all very nice. The room was not large but very comfotable...bed, desk, chair; private ensuite bathroom.
BARGAIN: Are you familiar with American Historic Inns? They have been putting out books on historic inns for years and have groups one can join with a membership and then get discounts BUT their best deal is buy their book ';Bed and Breakfasts and Country Inns'; and get one or two certificates in there for a free night at any of the b%26amp;bs in the book...making it worth something like $60 to $650. We used it for one of our nights at the Carriage House B%26amp;B. The site is below. You might give them a call before ordering to make sure this inn is still in the book if that%26#39;s a consideration. I have known them to express mail the book to people so that the person could receive the coupon in time to use it for a trip:

If you use this be sure to check any restrictions noted in the book and tell the inn.
Charleston will be wonderful at Christmas.

Hi,
I%26#39;d be interested to know how your stay went.
I have not been to Charleston since I was 12 years old, with my family. My dad was a history buff, and we had a wonderful stay at the Battery Carriage House. I still remember the cheesecake breakfast, silver service and the treehouse - and the beautifully appointed room. That was 27 (yes, I meant twenty seven) years ago, so the place has been there for some time :).
It was the first place I thought of in Charleston after Hurricane Hugo (%26#39;89).
I am planning a trip for my family. Though I would consider the Batter Carriage House (and definitely will stop by), I am hoping to be in the center of the historic district, possibly Holiday Inn or Indigo.
But, if a 27 year old recommendation from the memory of a 12 year old perspective counts, the battery Carriage House has the Southern history and charm that one is hoping for when visiting such a renowned city.
